Term
pituitary gland
Definition
-attached to the base of the brain. it has an anterior love and posterior lobe
-brain controls the activity of the pituitary gland
-releasing hormones from the hypothalamus control the secretions of the anterior pituitary. the releasing hormones are carried in the bloodstream directly to the anterior pituitary by hypophyseal portal veins.
-the posterior pituitary releases hormones into the bloodstream in response to nerve impulses from the hypothalamus.
-the anterior pituitary consists mostly of epithelial tussue arranged around blood vessels and enclosed in a capsule of callagenous connective tissue.
Term
Hypothalamus
Definition
Part of the brain
The control relay center of the endocrine system
Term
Pituitary Gland Hormones
Definition

Oxytocin: stimulates the utrine and breast contraction for milk release

Anti-Diuretic(ADH): stimulates re-absorption from kidney tubules

Prolactin(PRL): production of breast milk

Human Growth hormone(HDH): growth

                             Hypo: Dwarfism                                                        Hyper: Gigantism

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (THS): Stimulates the thyroid to release thyroxin

Adrenocorticotrophic (ACTH): Stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce: Corticosteriods

Corticosteriods: minter corticoids
                       glucocorticoids
                       cortisol

                       androgens

Lutenizing Hormone: Brings about ovulation and maintains the corpus luteum

Follicle Stimulating Hormone(FSH): stimulates growth and development of graafin folliciles.

Melanin Stimulating Hormone (MSH)

Gonadotrophins: secondary sexual characteristics

Interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH): produces sperm!

Intermedin: control of the melanocyte production

Term
Pineal & it's Hormone
Definition
A pea sized massive nerve tissue attached by a stalk to the posterior wall of the third ventricle of the brain, deep between the cerebral hemispheres at the back of the skull.

Function: secretes melatonin which regulates the pituitary gland and is associated with the biological clock.

Melatonin: A hormone produced by the pineal gland in the darkness but no bright light.
