Term
Behavorial Science
Definition
Study of human continuity and change, seeking to analyze the past, develop insight into the contemporary social life, and understand the impact of individual and social actions on the future.

*provide insight into personal behavior
*develop understanding of society and the world as part of larger human experience in time and place

Term
brain stem:
Definition
another name for the combination of the medulla and the pons
Term
axon:
Definition
transmitts messages from within the cell
Term
cerebellum
Definition
located behind the medulla and the pons, this is a large structure with a great many deep folds. It is responsible for the regulation and coordination of complex voluntary muscular movement, as well as the maintenance of posture and balance.
Term
Fight-or-Flight response
Definition
A sudden, drastic shift in the responses of the body's systems that prepares it for the immediate action; this occurs in reaction to a perceived external threat, or to internal stress.
Term
frontal lobe:
Definition
extending from the central suclus to the rear end of the brain, this lobe contains the precentral gyrus, Broca's area and the prefrontal cortex.
Term
Hindbrain
Definition
the layer of the brain that is considered to be more primitive that is concerned with digestion, reproduction, circulation, breathing, and the execution of fight-or-flight responses. It is composed of the medulla, the pons, and the cerrebellum.
Term
What is the hindbrain's nicknames?
Definition
R complex and repitilian brain.
Term
homeostasis
Definition
a state of balance among the various systems of the human body
Term
Amydala
Definition
a small almond-shaped structure located in the limbic system, it is important in the association of events with emotion
Term
anima
Definition
one of Jung's archetypes, it represents the feminine side of a man's personality.
Term
animus:
Definition
one of Jung's archetypes, it represents the masculine side of a woman's personality
Term
archtype:
Definition
a universal thoght form or ideal that contains a large element of emotion. According to Jung, these are "psychological organs"that provide a structural view of psychological life, and have evolved over time in much the same way that physical organs have.
Term
Broca's Area:
Definition
an area of the left frontal lobe that is critical for language production
Term
central sulcus:
Definition
a brain fissure seperating the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex from the parietal lobe.
Term
cingulate gyrus:
Definition
a structure on the surface of the cerebral hemispheres; the cortical part of the limbic system.
Term
collective unconscious:
Definition
one of the most original-and controversial-featurs of Jung's theory of personality, it is the strongest, most influential system of the psyche. The collective unconcious is a storehouse of latent memory, the psychic residue of human evolutionary development. This residue has built up as a result of recurring experiences over many generations, and it's almost entirely detached from any personal aspects of an individual. It is nearly universal among humans; all have more or less the same collective unconscious, which is caused by a common evolution.
Term
complex:
Definition
An organized group of feelings, thoughts, perceptions, and memories within the personal unconscious; each such group has a nucleus that acts as a kind of magnet attracting feelings, thoghts, perceptions, and memories to it. The nucleus, and many of the associated elements are unconcious at any particular time; however, any of the associations can and often do enter the consciousness.
Term
ego:
Definition
another name for the conscious mind, it consists of conscious perceptions, memories, thoughts, and feelings. it's responsible for a person's feelings of identity and continuity; from the viewpoint of the individual, it is regarded as being at the center of consciousness.
Term
Sigmund Freud:
Definition
an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a movement that advocated the idea that unconscious motives control much of behavior.
Term
functions:
Definition
according to Jung, these are the four ways in which we deal with the world, both inner and outer. the four functions are sensing, thinking, intuiting, and feeling.
Term
hippocampus:
Definition
a part of the limbic system that converts information into long term memory, and affects memory recall. Repeated use of specialized nerve networks in the hippocampus elevates memory storage; thus, this structure is involved in learning, both from experience and from study. To aid in memory and recall, the hippocampus helps select which memories are stored, perhaps by attaching an "emotion marker" to some events so they are likely to be recalled.
Term
Hypothalamus:
Definition
a small area of the limbic system located near the base of the brain. It has widespread connections with the rest of the forebrain and midbrain, nd contains a number of distant clusters of neutrons, called nuclei. It regulates the secretion of hormones by the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus contains receptors for specific hormones; in response to changes in the levels of those hormones, the hypothalamus sends messages to the pituitary gland- through nerves as well as hypothalamic hormones- to alter the pituitary's release of hormones.
Term
Id
Definition
according to Freud, this is the division of the psyche that is totally unconcious and serves as the source of instinctual impulses and demands for the immediate satisfaction of primitive needs.
Term
inferior function:
Definition
poorly developed and completely unconcious function.
Term
intuiting:
Definition
a kind of perception that works outside of the usual concious process. It is irrational or perceptual, like sensing, but comes from the complex integration of large amounts of information, rather than simple seeing or hearing. Jung said it was like seeing around the corners.
Term
irrational function:
Definition
according to jung, this is a method of evaluating information that involves perception rather than judging of information.
Term
Carl Jung
Definition
A Swiss psychiatrist who worked with Freud, and developed the Theory of Personality.
Term
latent memories:
Definition
traces of memories inherited from one's ancestral past, including not only the history of humans as a separate species, but their animal predecessors as well
Term
libido
Definition
According to Freud, this is the pychic and emotional energy associated with instinctual biological drives, most often with sexual desire.
Term
limbic system:
Definition
a group of interconnected brain structures, common to all mammals, and involved in olfaction, emotion, motivation, behavior, and various autonomic functions. Includes the amygdala and the hippocampus
Term
medulla:
Definition
also known as the medulla oblongota, it's located just above the spinal cord, and controls breathing, heart rate, vomiting, salivation, coughing, sneezing, and other vital reflexes
Term
mind-brain problem:
Definition
the mysterious relationship between the mind and the brain in humans.
