Peripheral Nervous System |
|
Definition
The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is composed of all nervous tissue located outside the spinal column and skull. It consists of sensory neurons, which carry impulses from the body to the CNS (afferent), and motor neurons, which carry impulses from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands (efferent). It is further divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system, which is subdivided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. |

Definition
The (9) thalamus receives all sensory stimuli except olfactory and processes and transmits them to the appropriate centers in the cerebral cortex. In addition, the thalamus receives impulses from the cerebrum and relays them to efferent nerves. |

Motor impulses transmitted to muscles under conscious control (walking and talking) belong to the somatic nervous system. |
