Term
Point estimate
Definition
A single value estimate for a population parameter. The most unbiased point estimate of the population mean is the sample mean.
Term
T-Distribution Properties
Definition
1) The t-distribution is bell-shaped and symmetric about the mean. 2) It is a family of curves, each determined by the 'degrees of freedom (which for a t-distribution is equal to n-1). 3) The total area under the t-curve is 1 or 100%. 4) The mean, median, & mode are equal to 0. 5) As the degrees of freedom increase, the t-distribution approaches the normal distribution.
Term
Degrees of Freedom
Definition
The number of free choices left after a sample statistic is calculated.
Term
Hypothesis test
Definition
A process that uses sample statistics to test a claim about the value of a population parameter.
Term
Statistical Hypothesis
Definition
A statement about a population parameter.
Term
Null Hypothesis (H0)
Definition
A statistical hypothesis that contains a statement of equality such as "greater than or equal to", =, or "less than or equal to".
Term
Alternative hypothesis (Ha)
Definition
The complement of the null hypothesis. It is a statement that must be true if Ho is false, and it contains a statement of strict inequality, such as <, "not equal to", >.
Term
Type 1 error
Definition
Occurs if the null hypothesis is rejected when it is true.
Term
Type 2 error
Definition
Occurs if the null hypothesis is not rejected when it is false.
Term
Level of Significance
Definition
Your maximum allowable probability of making a type 1 error.
Term
Test Statistic
Definition
The statistic that is compared with the parameter in the null hypothesis. The type of test used and the sampling distribution are based on the test statistic.
Term
P-value (probability value)
Definition
The probability of obtaining a sample statistic with a value as extreme or more extreme than the one determined from the sample data, if the null hypothesis is true.
Term
Left-tailed test
Definition
The alternative hypothesis contains the less-than inequality symbol (<).
P = (area in left of tail).
Term
Right-tailed test
Definition
The alternative hypothesis contains the greater-than inequality symbol (>).
P = (area in right of tail).
Term
Two-tailed test
Definition
The alternative hypothesis contains the not-equal-to symbol. Each tail has an area of .5P.
P = (area in tail of test statistic).
Term
z-test for a mean
Definition
A statistical test for a population mean.
Term
Rejection region
Definition
A range of values for which the null hypothesis is not probable. If a test statistic falls into this region, the null hypothesis is rejected.
Term
Critical Value
Definition
Separates the rejection region from the non-rejection region.
Term
t-Test for a mean (n < 30)
Definition
A statistical test for a population mean. This test can be used when the population is normal/nearly normal, standard deviation is unknown, and n < 30.
Term
z-Test for a proportion
Definition
A statistical test for a population proportion 'p'. It can be used when a binomial distribution is given such that np > 5 and nq > 5.
Term
Independent Sample
Definition
A sample selected from one population is not related to the sample selected from a second population.
Term
Dependent Sample (Paired or Matched Samples)
Definition
Each member of one sample corresponds to a member of the other sample.
Term
Interval estimate
Definition
An interval, or range of values, used to estimate a population parameter.
Term
Level of confidence
Definition
The probability that the interval estimate contains the population parameter.
Term
Population proportion
Definition
The probability of success in a single trial of a binomial experiment.
