Puritans' Emphasis on Education |
|
Definition
A: The importance of an academic focus in a Puritain community was revolutionary in its impact on the establishment of schools. They emphasised education to a considerable degree and had the greatest impact on American education. Many had graduated from Oxford and Cambridge, and they wished to establish these same university standards in the new world. Holy triad = home, chuch, school. Home is central place of education. partnership between family, school, church. Greatest emphasis placed on reading so that children could read the bible as soon as possible. John Clarke said, A schoolmaster must "...be a man of virtue... for it be the main end of education to make a virtuous man."

Puritan's Positive Relationship with Native Americans |
|
Definition
The state of relations with native americans was essential because the presence of peace with the neighbors facillitates the opening of schools, especially for the young. in absence of peace, schools are easy targets for attack. It would be foolish to run schools unless they felt peace existed, as women and children were defenseless inside. 4 years prior, Patuxets, a violent tribe who disliked white settlers, was wiped out by a mysterious plague and thought to have cursed the land, leaving it deserted. Samoset and Squanto came along later to greet Myles Standish and communicated with the Pilgrims, who believed the Patuxet plauge to be devine judgement. From there they shared food, medicine and compassion for each other.. |
