Term
Stocking and Glove Sensation Loss |
|
Definition
A pattern of peripheral nerve disease characterized by a relatively sharply demarcated loss of pain, touch, temperature, position and vibration sensation, accompanied by weakness, muscular atrophy, and loss of tendon reflexes–eg, the 'stocking' pattern of distal diabetic polyneuropathy, characterized by waxing and waning paresthesias that worsen at night

Sensory Lab Tests
Sharp/Dull |
|
Definition
*Explain the test *Get a baseline on unaffected area (face etc.) *Pt.'s eyes should be closes *Work distal to proximal *Compare symmetrical areas on opposite sides *Randomly alternate between sharp and dull and no sensation. *Ask for feedback about intensity as well as presence/absence of sensation *If a deficit is found, map it carefully-compare with areas of innervation, dermatomes etc. |
