Term
naphazoline
Definition
Brand name: Naphcon A

Indications: relief of ocular redness caused by irritation (conjunctival decongestant), antihistamine for relieving itchy/watery eyes.

Mechanism: naphazoline stimulates alpha adrenergic receptors, reducing ocular congestion and redness (sympathomimetic)
Term
cephalexin
Definition
Brand name: Keflex

Indications: antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia and bone, ear, skin, and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Works on both Gram + and -aerobes

Mechanism: Cephalosporins are bactericidal because they inhibit cell wall mucopeptide synthesis.
Term
naproxen
Definition
Brand name: Naprosyn/Aleve

Indications: NSAID, used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness. Widely prescribed for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (spinal arthritis), mild-mod pain, anti-inflammatory uses. shoulder pain due to bursitis, and menstruation pain. Non-prescription is used to reduce fever, relieve mild pain from headaches, muscle aches, toothaches, backaches, etc.

Mechanism: The mechanism of action of naproxen, like that of other NSAIDs, is believed to be associated with the inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity (COX). COX-2 generates prostaglandins, so naproxen inhibits prostaglandins, thereby inhibiting inflammation. Also inhibits thromboxane synthesis. Exact mechanism is unknown.
Term
norgestimate-ethinyl-estradiol
Definition
Brand name: Ortho-Tri-Cyclen

Indications: 1) prevention of pregnancy via oral contraceptive 2) Acne vulgaris in Pts at least 15 years old

Mechanism: Drug is a combination of synthetic progestin (norgestimate) and synthetic estrogen (ethinyl-estradiol). Suppresses LH and FSH, inhibiting ovulation; alters cervical mucus and endometrium
Term
polymyxin-B-bacitracin
Definition
Brand name: Polysporin

Indications: antibiotic for preventing minor wound infections

Mechanism:
Polymyxin B: bactericidal; increases cell wall permeability
Bacitracin: bacteriostatic; inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
Term
propranolol
Definition
Brand name: Inderal (banned in US), Inderal LA (okay in US)

Indications: hypertension, angine, migraine headache prophylaxis, IHSS (idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis)

Mechanism: non-selectively antagonizes beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors.
Term
bevacizumab
Definition
Brand name: Avastin

Indications: colorectal cancer (metastatic), glioblastoma multiforme (progressive), non-small cell lung cancer, renal cell cancer (metastatic), breast cancer (metastatic). OFF-LABEL: Wet Macular Degeneration

Mechanism: binds and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor, decreasing microvascular growth and metastatic progression
Term
acyclovir
Definition
Brand name: Zovirax

Indications: HSV encephalitis, genital/mucocutaneous HSV (immunocompromised Pts), HSV prophylaxis (immunocomp Pts), HSV keratitis, varicella (chicken pox) (immunocomp Pts), herpes zoster, herpes zoster ophthalmicus

Mechanism: inhibits DNA polymerase; incorporates into viral DNA
Term
moxifloxacin
Definition
Brand name: Vigamox

Indications: Bacterial conjunctivitis

Mechanism: bactericidal; inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV (fluoroquinolone)
Term
methotrexate
Definition
Brand name: Rheumatrex

Indications: rheumatoid arthritis (severe), psoriasis (severe recalcitrant disabling), mycosis fungoides, chemotherapy, trophoblastic tumors

Mechanism: immunosuppressant: inhibits dihydrofolate reductase; inhibits lymphocyte proliferation (folate antagonist)
