Widely prescribed for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (spinal arthritis), mild-mod pain, anti-inflammatory uses. shoulder pain due to bursitis, and menstruation pain. Non-prescription is used to reduce fever, relieve mild pain from headaches, muscle aches, toothaches, backaches, etc.
Mechanism: The mechanism of action of naproxen, like that of other NSAIDs, is believed to be associated with the inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity (COX). COX-2 generates prostaglandins, so naproxen inhibits prostaglandins, thereby inhibiting inflammation. Also inhibits thromboxane synthesis. Exact mechanism is unknown. |
