Definition
  • This law declared that you did not have to follow any kind of religion
  • Authored by Thomas Jefferson and steered through the Virginia Legislature by James Madison, it is still part of Virginia's state constitution

  • written in Philadelphia by delegates from 12 states, in order to replace the Articles of Confed. with a new form of govt.

  • he acknowleged a higher being as guiding the nation's steps
  • explained that the states would create a model for the world
  • put responsibility of nation in hands of the citizens

  • this act called for six Supreme Court Justices, created 13 lower courts, created the office of attorney general and provided for district attorneys

  • not a speech, but delivered in newspapers
  • he urged citizens to cherish Constitution as best means to preserve their liberty, must be respected as the supreme law of land
  • said that religion and morality were the basis for justice and good govt.

Definition
  • the Federalist-controlled Congress passed these laws which made it a crime to write anything bad about govt.
  • President John Adams claimed the laws were needed as a war measure
  • politically motivated, only imprisoned were Republicans, which were Adam's rivals

  • passed in response to Alien and Sedition Acts
  • authorized by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison
  • resolutions argued that the federal govt. had no authority to exercise power not given to them by Constitution
  • said states had the right to nullify unconst. federal laws

Definition
  • Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to to the Baptist Church from Danbury, Conneticut saying that the govt. could not interfere with the church
