Positive: - Large scale movement to USAs industrial centres, doubling wages - Black soldiers posted to England realised they did not have to be treated so badly, making them fight harder for equality Negatives: - Not allowed to combat in Marines until 1944 - Reffered to as mules by white soldiers - Black nurses only allowed to tend black soldiers - Given more dangerous jobs eg loading ammunition onto ships bound for war zones - Only 56 black soldiers promoted to officer by the end of the war |

Civil War ended in 1865 however still laws segregating black and white people, limiting black people's potential & promoting inequality in every way. -30 states outlawed interracial marriage - White primary permitted the democratic Party to prevent black people voting - 8 states had poll tax to prevent poor black and white people voting, but then parties often paid white people's poll tax - Also including several others for segregation, buses, public facilities, schools |

SNCC Formed by Ella Baker who had previously had a director position in SCLC but lost her job. Many women had high positions, unusual. Mainly students, strongly involved with freedom rides and lunch-counter sit ins. Rap Brown renamed the group the Student National Coordinating Committee in 1967 and supported violence. Ended 1970, after becoming very innefective. |
