- comes from the idea that people that think in the same way should be grouped together
- testing indicates what faction they belong to or they can choose which faction they think they fit in. If you do not fit in one you are considered factionless

- they believe "faction before blood."
- this means that they think who you are is more important than staying with your family if you leave them for your faction choice
- the government is selfish and they do not think about everyone's feelings

- People that are divergent test think in a different way and basically "break the system"
- they realize that the hallucinations of the test are not real when people that are not divergent find ways to survive the hallucinations
- everyone feels threatened by people that are divergent that's why they are usually killed or factionless

Divergent Government Control
- the government tries to control the people's minds by inserting a "tracking device" which is really an injection that puts them in a trance and makes the people do exactly what the government wants
- This injection does not work on people that are divergent
- this is how Triss and Four shut down the system before any more people were killed
- this type of government literally controls how you dress, where you live, what kind of people you are around, and even take you away from your family
