Term
What layer is unique to the stomach to help food churn?
Definition
Inner Oblique of the Muscularis Externa
Term
What do Parietal cells excrete? What do they look like? Where are they located?
Definition
  • HCL: lowers pH of gastric contents
  • Intrinsic factor: promotes absorption of vitamin B12
  • B12 deficiency causes pernicious anemia.

They look like fried eggs(sunny side up)

They are pink(acidophilic)

Located in the mucosa(Fundus and Body)

Term
What are the 4 stomach regions?
Definition
  • Cardia
  • Fundus
  • Body
  • Pylorus
Term
Cheif cells: location, function, appearance:
Definition
  • Located at the base of the mucosa in the Fundus and Body of stomach.

Function:

-secrete Pepsinogen which is activated by low pH to become the protease Pepsin.

-secrete Gastric Lipase which has weak lipolytic activity.(weak break down of some fat)

They are basophilic and appear blue.

Term
Mucous Neck Cells. Location and Function:
Definition

Located around parietal cells (Fundus and Body)

They secrete mucous that ends up being acidic because of the H+ that the parietal cells are releasing.
