Term
Cytoplasmic influence
Definition
The ovum's cytoplama contains genetic and epigentic material, organalles such as ribosomes and mitochondria and mRNA as well as other proteins that do influence the expression of zygotic DNA
Term
Egg to zygote to Embryo
Definition

Ummm.....

????

An egg is fertilized==zygote which is the produce of two gametes, cleavage occurs and an embryo ensues... eventually it becomes a fetus.. then a baby... then a toddler, kid, pre-teen, teen, young adult, adult... third age (senile)... death... ????

Term
Spermatogenesis vs Oogenesis
Definition

Spermatogenesis leads to the production of 4 sperm in 74 days, while oogenesis leads to the production of 1 ovum whose production cycle takes 30 years...

No wonder chromosomal mutations/damage is more likely to be maternal... a lot more time for errors to occur...

Term
Gametogenesis
Definition

see spermagenesis and oogenesis... duh...

???

Term
Fertilization
Definition

birds and bees... after male and female coopulate... sperm and egg combine... the haplotype gametes form a diploid zygote that can then generate life..etc.

occurs after ovulation, in the oviduct

Term
Maternal Zygotic Control of gene expression
Definition
for the first 24 hours after fertilization... the maternal epigenetic material/enzymes/proteins have vast control of the zygotic genetic function/protein synthesis.
Term
Chromatin
Definition
DNA is tightly packed into chromatin... The DNA wraps itself around histones... compact
Term
Zygotic clock
Definition
time-dependent mechanism in fertilized embryos that wait for ZGA until full mRNA synthesis controlled by itself can occur
Term
Zygotic Gene Activation
Definition

ZGA... occurs in two phases (first around 24 hours post fertilization)

It is when zygote gains full controll of its own protein production and expression of own genes through own methods

late ZGA occurs in later phases of 2 cell embryo

Term
Genomic imprinting/imprinting genes
Definition
It is the silencing of genes according to parental origin. It results in a departure of mendelian inheritance. Silencing occurs due to epigenetic manipulation such as methylatio/acytylation. MRNA and proteins present in the ovum may be critical for establishing maternal and paternal imprints.
Term
Mitochondrial DNA
Definition
Along the ovum cytoplasma are included mitochondria which contain pieces of its own DNA... Hence most of the inheritence of this DNA is maternal. This also means that there are conditions associated with the inheritance of defective/damaged mitochondrial DNA from mother, influincing metabolic disorders.
