Born and lived in Amherst, Massachussetts all her life, this poet prefered to live in seclusion, only having direct contact with her family. He was key in starting the artistic movement called the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s which involved many Aftican American poets, musicians (especially jazz), and artists. His poetry, novels, and plays told the stories of the African American people of his tiem including their struggles and their hopes. We read two poems by this poet: "Dreams" and "A Dream Deferred". |
