the small subunit and the charged tRNA bind to the mRNA

the small subunit binds to the 5' cap on the mRNA and it moves until it reaches the start codon

the start codon is found (AUG)

and then the large subunit joins the complex where initiation starts

and the p site where the tRNA adds it amino acid to the poly. chain

the other charged tRNA enters the A site where the anitcodon bind the the mRNA codon, helping it line up and put the correct amino acid.

then the large subunit ctalyzed 2 reaction: breaks the bond with tRNA and the  P site & peptide bond forms between the amino acid and the amino acid on the tRNA in the A site

also the large subunit has a peptidyl transferase activity- if rRNA is destroyed, the activity stops 

ends when a codon enters the A site

the stop codon binds to a protein release factor- lets the hydrolysis of bond between poly. chain and tRNA on the P site

the poly. chain separates from the ribosome- c terminus is the last amino acid added

specificity for the base at the 3' end of the codon is not always observed- allows cell to produce fewer tRNA species, but it doesnt allow the genetic code to be ambiguous
