Term
Predict the effects that renal failure might have on the body's homeostasis
Definition
1. The kidney serves as filter of the blood by removing wastes from the blood by producing urine and also reabsorb other important substances such as glucose.

renal failure: blood would come toxic as nitrogen and ammonium build up in blood.

2.Regulation of electrolytes, acid–base balance, and regulation blood pressure and volume. Kidney produces many hormones such as:
EPO (increase RBC production
Renin & angiotensin 1& 2 & ADH : to increase Blood vol and/or pressure

Renal failure: salt and water levels couldn’t be regulated therefore pressure and blood vol couldn’t be controlled .
Term
how is the pattern of blood flow unique in the kidney? How does this blood flow allow the kidney's form to follow its function?
Definition
In the kidney 2 capallaries beds suround the tubules of the nephron in order to provide them with oxygen, nutrients.

The 2 capillary beds also also take substances that have been reasbsorbed by the tubules (glucose etc) back INTO the blood.

= this allows the kidney to
filter blood & reclaim fluid and solutes
Term
why is the epithelium of the bladder stratified? (2)
Definition
prevent leakage

allows stretching without damage
Term
how does the form of the epithethilal tissue of the renal tubules follow its fcn?
Definition
its simple (not stratified) & microvilli

= increase surface area for absorption
Term
number the order of the way filtrate travels:
minor calyx
proximal tubule
collecting duct
capsular space
nephron loop
papillary duct
distal tube
Definition
1. capsular space (filtrate formed)
2. proximal tubule
3.nephron loop/ loop of Henle
4.distal tubule
5.collecting duct
6. papillary duct
7.minor calyx
Term
At the junction between the ascending limb of the nephron loop and the distal tubule we find a grp of densely packed cells called ________.

These cells come into contact with a portion of the afferent arteriole that contain cells called ________.

Together, the 2 are called the _______.
Definition
1. macula densa
2.JG
3.JG appartus
Term
urine drains from the kidneys via the
Definition
ureters
Term
urine is expelled from the body by a process called
Definition
micturition
Term
the urinary bladder and ureters are lined by
Definition
transitional epithelium
Term

how can you tell the renal cortex from the renal medulla on a microscope slide

give 2 structures that can be found in each

Definition

renal cortex:

renal tubules

glomeruli

renal medulla(middle):

loop  of henle

collecting duct
