Initial,middle, final, termination/follow-up
Initial Stage:interview and explanation/signing of informed consent -exchange of info -provide a atmosphere, develop relationship for self-exploration -Clarify nature of problem and set goals -talk about credentials, fees, policy, session review -limitations of confidentiality -usually take more than one session; diagnosis is needed for billing
Middle Stage: shift from external to internal -emotions will surface; showing signs of experiencing changes -may start to skip sessions/getting closer finding topic -transference/countertransference can develop -resistance comes in different forms; rage guilt
Final stage: Action stage -client becomes less dependent on counselor -becomes more self-confident, assertive, and perceptions change -work together to reach goals and work on ways to deal with resistance -not slip back; techniques: role play, homework
Termination/follow up: -is client ready? prepare them for last session -sadness may surface; review progress towards goals -counselor may resist; save relationship -follow up is necessary; two weeks later assess client progress |
