Term
Steps necessary for perfoming the "assessment" of the victim |
Definition
- Check for a response
- If victim does not respond, activate emergency response system & send for AED
- open the airway and check for adequate breathing
- If the victim is not breathing, begin rescue breaths

Term
Full procedure for performing compressions on an adult. hand positions, depth of compressions, rate, ratio |
Definition
- Position yourself at victim's side
- Make sure the victim is lying on his back on a firm flat surface
- Move or remove all clothing covering the victim's chest
- Put the heel of one hand on the center of the victim's bare chest between the nipples
- Put the heel of your other hand on top of the first hand
- Straighten your arms and position your shoulders directly over your hands
- Push hard and fast. Press down 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches with each compression. make sure you press straight down on the victim's breastbone
- at the end of each compression allow for chest to fully recoil
- deliver compression in a smooth rate of 100 compressions per minute.
Term
What is meant by "chest recoil" and why is it important |
Definition
Chest recoil is the re-expansion of the chest. Full chest recoil allows more blood to refill the heart between chest compressions. Incomplete chest recoil will reduce the blood flow created by compressions. |

Term
gastric inflation and how rescuers can reduce the risk |
Definition
When too much air pressure causes the stomach to inflate; it can be reduced by limiting the pressure of air used in CPR |
Term
steps for 1-rescuer adult CPR |
Definition
- Check the victim for a response, shout for help
- if you are alone, activate emergency response system and get and AED, if you aren't alone have someone do it for you
- Open the victim's airway and check for adequate breathing (take at least 5 seconds but no more than 10)
- If the victim is not breathing adequately, give 2 breaths that produce visible chest rises
- Check for a pulse
- If you do not feel a firm pulse, begin cycles of 30 compressions and 2 ventilations
Term
Definition
initials for a computerized medical device that can check a person's heart rhythm. It can recognize a rhythm that requires a shock and it can advise the rescuer when a shock is needed. It uses voice prompts, lights, and text messages to tell the rescuer the steps to take |
Term
Definition
- Check responsiveness
- Power on AED
- attach electrode pads to victim's bare chest
- "clear" the victim
- allow for AED to analyze victim
- "clear" victim and deliver a shock if indicated
- resume CPR beginning with chest compressions. After 2 minutes of CPR, AED will prompt to repeat steps 4-6
Term
difference between the rate of compressions and the ratio of compressions to ventilations |
Definition
Rate is about 100 compressions per minute
compression to ventilation ratio is 30:2 |
Term
differenced in performing adult CPR vs. child CPR |
Definition
- different rate of breathing
- give 2 minutes of rescue breathing in child before activating emergency response
Term
differences in performing 1-rescuer child CPR and 2-rescuer child CPR |
Definition
Term
explain when a rescuer would perform "rescue breathing" and what the rates for Adult, Child, and Infant rescue breathing are |
Definition
For use when victim is unresponsive and not breathing; rate for adult- 1 breath every 5-6 seconds; child- 1 breath every 3-5 seconds; infant- 1 breath every 3-5 seconds |

- if speaking or coughing is possible encourage them to cough up the obstruction
- if speaking or coughing is not possible begin abdominal thrusts
Term
Describe the process for clearing an airway obstruction in an infant |
Definition
Responsive infant:
kneel or sit with infant in lap (remove clothing from chest if possible)

Deliver up to 5 slaps forcefully in the middle of the back between infant's shoulder blades using the heel of your hand
Place free hand on infant's back & turn the infant over
give 5 quick downward chest thrusts in same location (below the nipple line) (deliver at rate of 1 per second)
