Community organizing is the process through which communities are helped to identify common problems or goals, mobilize resources, and in other ways develop and implement strategies for reaching their goals. Three factors that affect community organizing are: community capacity, community empowerment, and social capital. Community organizing methods: 1. Locality development- heavily process-oriented; stressing consensus and cooperation aimed at building group identity and a sense of community; concept of broad self-help participation. 2. Social planning- heavily task-oriented; stressing rational-empirical problem solving and involves various levels of participation from many people and outside planners. 3. Social action- both task and process-oriented; useful in helping organize disadvantaged segments of the population; redistributes power and/or resources, which enables institutional or community change; used in gay and civil rights movements Limitations- problem based and community centered Common theme- work of many has better chance of problem solving than work of few |
