Colonial Farm Life |
|
Definition
Farm life in Colonial times was very difficult. The men would go out to the fields and would plant things in the fields, then harvest them in the fall. They would also take care of fences, and overall tend to the fields. The women worked on sewing and cooking for the most part. The children would help out on the farm as soon as they were old enough. The only day they wouldn't work on the farm was on Sundays, because that was the day the family goes to church. |

Colonial City Life |
|
Definition
The people who lived in the city were not rich, but they were not poor either. The people usually worked as tradesmen. Tradesmen were blacksmiths, tailors, merchants, lawyers, etc. Unlike the children living on farms, children in the city went to school every day. Or, if you were really rich, then you could send your child to England to study. Same as farm life, going to church every Sunday was important, and usually where the town would discuss ideas. |

Colonial Crime and Punishment |
|
Definition
Crime and Punishment in colonial times were brutal. The crimes included blasphemy, idleness, adultery, and stealing. Punishments for these acts were whipping posts and public beatings. Later on, they developed prison, which is what they did to criminals from then on. Even if someone didn't commit these crimes, if they had different beliefs than everyone else, then they would be subdued to punishment for that. A well-known example of this would be the Salem Witch trials when they burned people they believed were "witches". |

Colonial Education |
|
Definition
Education in Colonial times really depended on your social class. Also, only boys went to school, as girls were taught by their mothers at home. Boys from the upper-class families were taught by private home tutors, then sent to college. Boys from middle-class families would go to regular school, and occasionally they would attend college. The lower class would just take on apprenticeships from workers; and slaves got no education at all unless they were freed. |

Colonial Leisure Activities |
|
Definition
In their free time, Colonists went to church on Sundays. But if they happened to have more time, then they would engage in many other activities. They did gambling, card games, and board games. When children weren't doing schoolwork, they spent time playing games outside with each other. They also enjoyed things like shooting and wood-chopping. Everyone (children and adults) liked to sing along to songs and dance. Wealthy families could also attend private dances and dinners. |
