Term
Neurological Trauma
Definition
Primary treatment of patients with
blunt or penetrating head injury is
supportive.
• Airway management is of primary
importance.
Continuous monitoring of B/P is
essential.
– Alterations in BP can reveal serious
pathology occurring and can be an
indicator of future problems.
• Consider protocols for medical
interventions including passive coolin
Term
Mannitol
Definition
Indications/Dosage
• Acute cerebral edema
• Blood transfusion
reactions
• 1.5 to 2.0 g/kg IVP
Contraindications
• Any patient with acute
pulmonary edema
• Severe pulmonary
congestion
• A patient who is
profoundly
hypovolemic
Term
Seizure Disorder
Definition
One of the most common neurological
emergencies for EMS providers.
• State of uncontrolled firing of neurons
in one or multiple areas of brain
Term
Status epilepticus
Definition
series of seizures
without a full recovery of consciousness
between the seizures or a seizure
lasting greater than 30 minutes
Term
Pharamacological treatment for seizures
Definition
aimed at
decreasing ion flow channels into the
affected brain tissue and slowing the
rapid neural firing.
Term
Diazepam Class
Definition
Anticonvulsant and sedative
Term
Diazepam Description
Definition
benzodiazepine frequently used as:
– An anticonvulsant
– A sedative
– An hypnotic
Term
diazepam Mechanism of Action
Definition
Binds to specific sites on gamma-
aminobutyric acid (GABA) Type A
receptors within the brain.
• GABA is the major inhibitory
neurotransmitter of the central nervous
system.
• Has no direct effect on the GABA
receptors, but potentiates the effects of
GABA within the brain.
Term
diazepam Pharmacokinetics
Definition

– 1–5 minutes (IV), 15–30 minutes (IM)
• Peak effects
– 15 minutes (IV), 30–45 minutes (IM)
