SKILL #13: Brush the Resident's Teeth

Procedure:

1. Standard opening           
2. Raise head to 30 Degrees
3. Tilt head toward you
4. Place towwel across chest
5. Place emesis basin
6. Put paste on a wet brush
7. Put on gloves
8. 1 part mouthwash with 3 part water
9. Offer to rinse with mouthwash
10. Brush upper first, lower then
11. Don't forget tongue
12. Rinse again
13. Dry face with towel. Clean supplies.
14. Remove gloves
15. Standard Closing Procedure

• Toothpaste
• Mouthwash
• Cup
• Emesis Basin
• Gloves
• Towel

Standard Opening Procedure

1. Wash hands
2. Gather supplies
3. Knock and pause
4. Self introduce and check resident's ID band
5. Explain procedure
6. Ask permission
7. Provide privacy

Standard Closing Procedure

1. Position resident in a comfortable manner with proper body alignment
2. Return bed to lowest position
3. Raise side rails
4. Call light within reach
5. Say thank you and goodbye
6. Open privacy curtain
7. Care for equipment as necessary
8. Wash hands
9. Report and record

Resident's Dentures Care

Supplies:

1. Washcloth
2. Towel
3. Gloves
4. Tissues
5. Emesis Basin
6. Denture cup
7. Toothbrush
8. Toothpaste
9. Mouthwash Solution
