History: Originally cocktail contained "stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, bitters.." Additions and refinements added over 19th cent. W/these additions, folks would ask for an "old fashioned" cocktail their grandfather might enjoy. - Hence the OF.
Ingredients: - 2oz bourbon/rye whiskey - 1tsp sugar/1 sugarcube -2-3 dashes bitters (Angostura)
Directions: Sugar doused w/bitters and dissolved/stirred w/a couple drops of water. Add whiskey, chill, add ice cubes, and garnish. |

Ingredients: - 1 1/2oz Gin - 1 1/2oz Sweet Vermouth . (Vermouth = aromatized/fortified wine flavored w/various botanicals including roots, barks, flowers, seeds, herbs, and spices) - 1tsp Maraschino liqueur - 2 dashes orange bitters - Lemon twist/garnish.

History: Similar to Margarita but w/cognac and lemon instead of tequila and lime. Quality matters w/good sidecar. Cognac named after town in France, produced in wine-growing region. Must be made from specific grapes; twice distilled in copper pot stills, and aged at least two years in French oak barrels from Limousin or Troncais. Matures similar to whiskies and wine when aged in barrels. - Cointreau = brand of triple sec produced in France. Drunk as an aperitif and digestif, in addition to common cocktail ingredient.
