Missouri Compromise
Definition
Kept the balance of free and slave states by allowing Missouri to join as a slave state and created Maine as a free. The Louisiana Purchase Territory was to be free - any thing above 36 / 30 mark.

Kansas Nebraska Act
Definition
Douglas created the act which would allow the people to vote on whether they wanted to be slave or free states above the 36/30 parallel. Blacks were counted as 1/3 of a person. Kansas and Nebraska became slave states.

Definition
South was agriculture and relied on slaves. North was industrial and relied on immigrants to work for them. South was socially isolated and focused on old traditions. North was in contact with Europe and was more modern. North had more people. South had fewer white and was mostly slaves.

Definition
Invented by Eli Whitney (black) it allowed for more cotton to be grown easily. The effect was that more slaves were needed to gather the cotton.

Definition
They had immigrants to do the work in factories. Their economy was set up for manufacturing and trade not agriculture.

Definition
series of debates on train cars between Lincoln and Stephen Douglas for Illinois Senate seat. Douglas supported slavery and believed in Popular Sovereignty where people vote on laws. Lincoln lost the race but it made him a famous person all country.
