Explain the events that led the South to secede from the Union.
Definition
The causes of the war included the election of Abraham Lincoln, and the differences in the North's and South's views over economics, state's rights, and slavery.

Definition
Life in Georgia was affected by the war. The Navel blockade prevented the export of cotton, the major income of the south. Therefore they little money to buy military supplies and food. Women took over the responsibilities of the plantation and many slaves died.

Briefly describe the progression of war, including major battles.
Definition
The Civil war began with the battle of Fort Sumter which was a confederate victory. The first real battle was Bull Run (Confederate). There were many southern victories in the first 2 years of the war but they could not match the Union equipment, numbers, and economic resources. The battle of Gettysburg was fought on Union soil and a Union victory. then came the Battle of Vicksburg which allowed the union to gain control of the Mississippi R. The bloody battle of Chickamauga allowed the Union to capture Chattanooga. Now the War had come to GA and The battle of Kennesaw Mt. took place. After winning this battle the Union had nothing more in their path to capture Atlanta and begin Sherman's march to sea and leaving destruction in his wake.

Describe Georgia's specific role in the war.
Definition
GA was the main supplier for the war. The farmers grew corn and other foods needed by the soldiers instead of cotton. GA had more industry than any other southern state therefore they supplied military equipment such as cannons, gunpowder, sabers, wagons, railroad cars, tools, saddles, harnesses, and clothing. Also GA had the best railroads so they transported Confederate soldiers too.
