-Contextualizing- by reminding us of the topic being discussed or the circumstances in which a statement was made e.x. offensive (mean) vs. offensive (sports)
-Clarifying intent- ask what the speaker means e.x. asking what the US constitution means on the right to bear arms
-Negotiating meaning- negotiating away problematic vagueness by reaching a compromise e.x. negotiating fair wage at work
-Using qualifications, exceptions, or exclusions- introduce qualifications that clarify which cases are included or excluded
-Stipulating meaning- resolves problematic ambiguity by establishing what a term shall mean for a specific set of purposes ex. driving under the influence |
