|
Definition
The photographer, Dorothea Lange, was on her way back from a month-long job when she passed a “Pea-Pickers Camp” on the side of the road. She turned around and found a pregnant Florence Thompson caring for her two daughters while her sons went to get help to fix their broken down car. The photograph Lange took of Thompson appeared in news stories about the poor pickers, and prompted the government to donate over 20,000 pound of food to the camp. Despite Lange’s success after this photograph, she would always be known for this work. Thompson, however, left with her family before enjoying relief efforts at the camp. It took 44 years for her to be recognized as the woman in the photograph, and she was bitter about the fact that it had made Lange so famous while not improving her life at all. |
