Term
landform
Definition
a natural feature on Earth's surface (mountains, hills, plains, valleys, plateaus, coastal features
Term
weathering
Definition
a gradual wearing away or changing of rock and soil caused by water, ice, temperature changes, wind, chemicals, and/or living things
Term
erosion
Definition
the moving of pieces of soil or rock by gravity, wind, water, ice, or plants and animals
Term
deposition
Definition
the laying down (leaving behind) of rock, soil, organic matter, or other material on the surface of Earth
Term
landslide
Definition
a rapid downhill movement of large amounts of rock and soil
Term
volcano
Definition
a cone-shaped landform that sometimes releases hot rocks, gases, and ashes
Term
fault
Definition
a break or crack in Earth where the rocks on either side move in different ways
Term
earthquake
Definition
a shaking of Earth's crust caused by sudden shifting movements in the crust
Term
epicenter
Definition
the point of Earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake
Term
How does weather make cracks in rock get bigger?
Definition
Water seeps into cracks and when it freezes, it expands putting pressure on the rocks; temperature changes cause rocks to expand and contract, weakening them.
Term
Causes of Weathering
Definition
water, ice, temperature changes, living things, acid rain, wind
Term
Things that Cause Erosion and Deposition
Definition
moving water; waves; glaciers; wind
Term
How is a landslide different from other kinds of erosion and deposition?
Definition
Rocks and other material moves very fast in a landslide.
Term
Why are some volcanic eruptions more violent than others?
Definition
The temperature and kind of rock that make up the magma determine this.
Term
What causes magma beneath a volcano to rise to the surface?
Definition
Pressure builds causing an explosion and the gases in the magma forces it upward.
Term
How is a fault, an earthquake, and an epicenter related?
Definition
An earthquake occurs along a fault and the shaking spreads outward from the epicenter.
Term
How is deposition caused by moving water LIKE deposition caused by wind?
Definition
Both leave material behind in a different place.
Term
How is deposition caused by moving water DIFFERENT FROM deposition caused by wind?
Definition
Water can carry small particles along with larger ones, but can only carry the larger particles for short distances. Wind can ONLY carry small particles.
Term
How is physical weathering LIKE chemical weathering?
Definition
Both wear material away.
Term
How is physical weathering DIFFERENT FROM chemical weathering?
Definition
Water, ice, temperature changes, wind, and living things moving things around can cause physical weathering. Living things releasing chemicals, pollution, and acid rain can cause chemical weathering. In physical weathering the worn away material is smaller bits of the original material, but in chemical weathering, the worn away material is different from the original material.
