Term
How fast is physical growth for a child during their school years?
Definition
Physical growth for a child is slow. Children grow at a slow, regulated pace.
Term
What are some growth averages and trends as a child (boys&girls) grows during their school years? (Starting at age 6)
Definition
At age 6 - a NA child weighs about 45 pounds and is 3 1/2 feet tall

Future - 2-3 inches of high and 5 pounds in weight are added on average each year.
Term
What are the different growth trends between boys and girls? (Ages 6-9)
Definition
Ages 6-8 - Girls are slightly shorter and lighter and boys

Age 9 - the trend reverses, girls approach the dramatic growth period, which occurs 2 years earlier than boys. Girls accumulate fat at a faster rate and boys have more muscle.
Term
What portion of the body grows the fastest?
Definition
Lower portion (Legs and feet).
Term
What is happening to the bones and muscles? What do the changes allow the child to do? What does it cause?
Definition
Bones lengthen and broaden.

Ligaments are not yet firmly attached to the bones + increasing muscle strength = unusual flexibility.

Causes a desire for physical activity and "growing pains" - stiffness and aches in the legs as the muscles are adapting to an enlarging skeleton
Term
What is happening with a child's teeth during ages 6-12
Definition
They lose all (20) primary teeth.
Girls lose theirs slightly earlier than boys.
Teeth seem too large at first, but growth in facial bones causes the face to lengthen and jaw to widen, accommodating for the size.
Term
What is myopia?
Definition
- known as nearsightedness
- affects nearly 25% of children
- heredity plays a role, identical twins are more likely to share the condition
- Occurs more in Asian children than Caucasian.
Term
What causes myopia? How can it be fixed?
Definition
Biological Trauma - lower birth weight shows a higher rate, believed to result from immaturity of visual structures, slower eye growth, and greater incidence of eye disease.

Physically - reading under dim light, siting close to a TV/computer screen, writing, and doing other close work. (Parent's common term "you'll ruin your eyes!" is well-founded)

- can fixed easily with corrective lenses
Term
What is otitis media? What causes it? What can happen if it keeps reoccurring?
Definition
inflammation of the middle ear.

as children become older, the Eustachian tube grows, preventing fluid and bacteria to travel easily from the mouth to the ear, causing the infection to become less frequent.

- 3-4% develop permanent hearing loss as a result of repeated episodes. (prevented with regular screening)
