Hamilton's plan to restore credit: In 1790 Hamilton proposed that the new gov- ernment pay off the millions of dollars in debts owed by the Confederation government (b/c of the Revolution) to other countries and to individual American citizens.The states had fought for the nation’s independ- ence, Hamilton argued, so the national govern- ment should pay for the cost of their help. Hamilton also believed that federal payment of state debts would give the states a strong interest in the success of the national government.

Thomas Jefferson
Definition

(1743-1826). Author of the Declaration of Independence, third President of the United States, major architect of the U.S.'s westward expansion and founder of the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson is a figure of world historical significance. His writings are important documents for the history of America's founding and for the Founders' attempts to put into practice theories associated with the eighteenth century Enlightenment. Jefferson's concepts of democracy remain inspirational for many people today, even as his views on religion and race remain a source of controversy.

With Adam's many failed policies and the problems surrounding his presidency, the election of 1800 saw Jefferson narrowly elected president and the end of the Federalist party.
