The first day of the week is Sunday (day 1, in Arabic, essentially), because Friday is the holy day (as with the Western Sunday).  So Friday and Saturday are the weekend days in the Middle East.  The word for Friday also refers to gathering at the mosque, which is what men do on Friday-they attend prayer on Fridays.
