Term
The characteristics of Living Things are:
Definition
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition.
Term
Respiration
Definition
They obtain energy from food through a process known as
Term
Sensitivity
Definition
All living things have senses that allow them to "respond" when there is a change in their environment.
Term
Growth
Definition
Their appearance changes as they grow from baby to adult.
Term
Reproduction
Definition
All living things....To ensure the survival of their own kind.
Term
Excretion
Definition
It is the process of removing harmful and unwanted substances from an organism
Term
Diversity
Definition
The Earth supports a wide variety of living organisms.
Term
Plants
Definition
It can be divided into 2 major groups - Plants that reproduce seeds and plants that don't reproduce seeds. Plants that reproduce can be sub-divided into "flowering" and "non-flowering'.
Term
(Reproduced by seeds)
Flowering Plants
Definition
Eg. Hibiscus
-Roots, stems and leaves are present.
-Seeds are found in the fruits.
Term
(Does not Reproduce seeds)
Non- Flowering Plants
Definition
(Algae)
Eg. Pine
- Roots, stems and leaves are present.
-Have needle- like leaves.
-Seeds are found in cone.
Term
(Does not Reproduce seeds)
Non- Flowering Plants
Definition
(Ferns)
Eg. Ferns
- Roots, stems and leaves are present.
-Reproduce by spores.
Term
Animals
Definition
The can be divided into 2 main groups - "vertebrates" and "Invertebrates".
Term
Vertebrates
Definition
Are animals with backbones. They can be divided into 5 sub-groups - Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals.
Term
Fish
Definition
- Cold Blooded.
- Body usually covered with scales.
- Breathe using gills.
- Live in fresh water or sea water.
Term
Amphibians
Definition
- Cold - Blooded
- Have moist skin, without scales.
- Breathe through lungs and moist skin.
- Live partly on land and in water.
Term
Reptiles
Definition
- Cold - Blooded.
- Have dry skin usually covered with horny scales.
- Breathe through lungs.
- Live on land.
Term
Birds
Definition
- Warm Blooded.
- Have beaks.
- Have feathers.
- Have wings but not all can fly.
- Breathe through lungs.
- Lay eggs.
Term
Mammals
Definition
- Warm - Blooded
- Have hair.
- Breathe through lungs.
- Most give birth to their young alive.
Term
Invertebrates
Definition
Are animals without backbone.
They can be divided into 3 sub-groups - 'arthropods', 'annelids' and 'molluscs'.
Term
Arhtropods
Definition
The bodies of arthropods are divided into segments (parts). They are converted with a hard exoskeleton - a structure that gives them shape and protects them.
Term
Annelids
Definition
It has a long, cylindrical bodies. Their bodies are divided into many segments. Each segment may have many bristles.
Term
Molluscus
Definition
They have soft bodies that may be covered by a shell. They use a muscular foot for movement.
Term
Microorganisms
Definition
They are very small living organisms that can only be seen under a microscope.
They are neither plants nor animals.
There are 3 types of microorganisms - Bacteria, Viruses and Fungi.
Term
Bacteria
Definition
They are:
- Visible under a microscope, and
- Larger than Viruses.

It can be both useful and harmful.
They are useful as they are involved in the breakdown of dead plants and animals.
Bacteria are used to curdle milk in the process of making cheese and yogurt.
They can be as harmful as they can cause diseases in living plants and animals.
Term
Viruses
Definition
They are:
- The smallest disease - causing organisms known.
- Not visible under the ordinary light microscope. To examine their detailed structure, an electron microscope is required.
- able to cause diseases like AIDS, H1N1 and Hepatitis.
Term
Fungi
Definition
- It has no roots, stems or leaves.
- Some fungi feed on living plants and animals.
- Some fungi on dead matter.Others feed on living plants and animals.
- Some fungi can be useful. An example is "Penicillium" notatum that produces the antibiotic, penicillin.
- Others can cause fungal diseases such as ringworm.
