Term

Anticholinergic Drugs

What do they do?

What types of receptors can Anticholinergic Drugs act on?

Definition

-Block action of acetylcholine on parasympathetic nervous system

-Can act on cholinergic muscarinic or nicotinic receptors

Term

Anticholinergic Drugs:

Muscarinic Receptors

where are they found?

Definition
found in brain, secretory glands, heart and smooth muscle
Term

Anticholinergic Drugs:

NICOTINIC RECEPTORS

where are they found?

Definition
found in autonomic ganglia and skeletal muscles
Term

Anticholinergic Drugs

 Mechanism of Action/Effects

Definition

B/c cholinergic muscarinic receptors are found throughout the body anticholinergic drugs have wide range of effects:

CNS stimulation followed by depressions

Decreased CV response to parasympathetic stimulation

Bronchodilation & decreased respiratory secretions

Antispasmodic effects in GI tract

Mydriasis and cycloplegia of eye

Decreased secretions from salivary glands & sweat glands

Relaxation of uterus, bladder, smooth muscle in gallbladder & bile ducts

Term

Anticholinergic Drugs:

INDICATIONS FOR USE

Definition

GI & GU disorders

Preoperative

Ophthalmology

Respiratory Disorders

Cardiac Disorders

Parkinson's Disease

Term

Anticholinergic Drugs:

Individual Drugs:Belladona Alkaloids & Derivatives

ATROPINE

Definition

PROTOTYPE for this drug

Drug of choice to treat symptomatic sinus bradycardia, must be moderate to large dose to promote stimulant affect (can cross Blood/Brain barrier), small doses may cause decrease in HR

Term

Anticholinergic Drugs:

Individual Drugs:Belladona Alkaloids & Derivatives

HYOSCYAMINE (ANASPAZ)

Definition
Used to treat GI and GU disorders than are characterized by spasms (bladder, stomach, intestinal spasms), increased secretion, and increased motility
Term

Anticholinergic Drugs:

Individual Drugs:Belladona Alkaloids & Derivatives

SCOPOLAMINE

Definition

Depresses CNS: Causes amnesia, drowsiness, euphoria, relaxation, and sleep

Scopolamine patch (cotton mouth, motion sickness)

Term

Urinary Antispasmodics (slows you down from urinating)

OXYBUTYNIN (DITROPAN, DITROPAN XL)

Definition

^ bladder capacity, decrease frequency of voiding

ALSO used to treat bladder spasms

Term

Urinary Antispasmodics (slows you down from urinating)

TOLTERODINE (DETROL, DETROL LA)

Definition
Inhibits bladder contraction, decrease detrusor muscle pressure and delays urge to void
Term

Antisecretory/Antispasmodic

GLYCOPYRROLATE (ROBINUL)

Definition
Antisecretory/Antispasmodic: used to help dry oral/tracheal secretions
