Psychology- the scientific study of behavior and mental processes

• Being that psychology is a science it is always best to avoid bias that could possibly lesd to faulty accusations.
• Not only is important to simply not make accusations, its best to use precise and careful measurement

• 4 main goals of psychology are the most important aspect of the science
• 2 of the 4 are: Description- as in, "what is hapening?" and Explanation- Why is it happening?

• the last 2 of the 4 Main Goals of Psychology are: Prediction- Will it happen again? and then Control- How will it be changed?

• In Germany in 1879 at Wilhelm Wundt's Psychology Laboratory, the development of the technique of objective introspection occured. 

•  the process of objectively examining and measuring one's thoughts and mental activities.

• focused on the structure and other basic elements of the mind

• Titchener was one of Wundt's students; he is the one that finally brought Structuralism to America.

• She was one of Edwars Titchener's students. This was the very first women to earn a PhD in psychology

After all of the greaat ideas and innovations in phsycology, sadly Structuralism just died out in the early 1900's. 

• psychodynamic perspective- this is the modern form of psychoanalyisis which also includes behavioral perspective

• humanistic perspective- free will and the human potential for grpwth (self actualization) are emphasized

• cognitive persective- cognitive perspective is the study of studying the mental processes
• developed by Moslow and Rogers

• psyciatrists are medical doctors who provide diagnosis and therapy 
• psyciatric social workers have lots of special training

• All psychiatrists use the very usefull scientific method because this technique prevents bias and mch other confusion

• The 5 main steps:

1. perceiving the question(describing)
2. forming a hypothesis
3. testing the hypothesis
4. drawing the conclusions
5. reporting the results

• correlations: finding the relationships- this is the measure of how strongly variables are related
• correlation allows researchers to discover and predict reationships

• functionalism- this is the process that helps the mind adapt to its environment around it
