• a form of government where the sovereign power or ultimate authority rested in the hands of a monarch who claimed to rule by a divine right and therefore resonsible only to god

• A style that dominated painting, sculpture, archetecture, and music from about 1580-1730
• generally charcterized by elaborate ornanmentation and dramatic events

Christian Humanism

• beleived in the abiltiy of human beings to reason and improve themselves through analysis of classical and especially Christianity antiquity, Erasmus was the most famous proponent.
