Term
thermal energy
Definition
total energy due to moving particles that make up matter
Term
conduction
Definition
the transfer of heat energy by one thing touching another
Term
conduction (examples)
Definition
heating pad, spoon that gets hot while cooking
Term
heat
Definition
the transfer of thermal energy between matter of different temperatures
Term
conductor
Definition
a material that readily allows heat to pass through it
Term
insulator
Definition
a material that limits the amount of heat that passes through it
Term
temperature
Definition
a measure of the average amount of motion of the particles in matter
Term
convection current
Definition
a pattern of heat energy
Term
radiation
Definition
the energy that is sent out in little bundles; it can move through matter or empty space
Term
radiation (examples)
Definition
heat and light from the sun; heat and light from a fireplace; heat and light from a light bulb
Term
energy
Definition
the ability to cause change or do work
Term
thermometer
Definition
a tool that measures how hot something is
Term
How does heat affect the particles in an object?
Definition
The more heat, the more the particles move.
Term
How does a thermometer work?
Definition
Since the particles in substances move more when more heat is present, the alcohol expands when it touches something hot and rises up the tube, and since the particles in substances move less when less heat is present, the alcohol contracts when it touches something cold and takes up less space in the tube.
Term
How does a radiator work?
Definition
Water is heated by the furnace and is pumped through the radiator where it is heats the metal and is returned to the furnace.
Term
How does a radiator heat the air in the room?
Definition
The hot metal heats the air which rises and spreads. The warm air eventually cools and sinks, creating a convection current of the air in the room.
Term
How is a conductor different from an insulator?
Definition
A conductor is a material that readily allows heat to pass through it, but an insulator is a material that limits the amount of heat that passes through it.
Term
conductor (examples)
Definition
a metal spoon, a copper penny, an iron bar
Term
insulator (examples)
Definition
a wooden spoon, a foam cup, a marble countertop
Term
What is the boiling point of water on the Fahrenheit scale?
Definition
212 degrees
Term
What is the boiling point of water on the Celsius scale?
Definition
100 degrees
Term
What is the freezing point of water on the Fahrenheit scale?
Definition
32 degrees
Term
What is the freezing point of water on the Celsius scale?
Definition
0 degrees
Term
What is normal human body temperature on the Fahrenheit scale?
Definition
98.6 degrees
Term
What is normal human body temperature on the Celsius scale?
Definition
37 degrees
Term
What is average room temperature on the Fahrenheit scale?
Definition
72 degrees
Term
What is average room temperature on the Celsius scale?
Definition
20 degrees
Term
convection (example)
Definition
how a radiator heats a room
