Definition
He was a slave from Mississippi who went to the free territories of Illinois and Wisconsin with his owner. He returned to Missouri where his owner died.

-He sued for his freedom and his case went all the way to the Supreme Court?

argument? Since he lived in "free" territories where there were no slaves, he should be free.

Definition
Slaves were not U.S. citizens so they did not have rights to go to court. Slaves are property and were protected by the 5th Amendment.
