What is the VSEPR theory?
|
|
Definition
- The VSEPR theory or better known as the valence shell electron pair repulsion theory, is one that is based the idea that eletron groups repel each other through coulombic forces. The repulsions between electron groups on the interior atoms of a molecule determines the geometry of the molecule.

What are the characteristics of Two Electron groups |
|
Definition
- This group has two electron groups( two single bonds) about the central bonding atom.
- The geometry of this group is determined throough the repulsion between the groups which assume 180 degree bond angles or linear geometry[image]

Term
What are the characteristics of Three electron group |
|
Definition
- Has three electron groups around the central atom
- Each bond forms 120 degree angles

Term
What are the characteristics of the Five electron groups |
|
Definition
- Five electron groups around the central atom
- three of the electron groups lie in a single plane as in trigonal bipyramidal geometry and the other two bonds on either side of the trigonal plane
- Angles are not the same
- Angles between the equatorial positions(The three bonds in the trigonal plane)120 degrees
- angles in the axial positions( the two bonds on either side of the trigonal plane) are 90 degree

What are the characteristics of six electron group |
|
Definition
- Six electron groups around a central atom, assumes an octahedral geometry
- Four group lie in a single plane with the five and six groups above and below it. The angles are all 90 degrees

Term
What are the characteristics of four electron groups with lone pairs |
|
Definition
- Central atom has four electron groups(One lone pair and three bonding)or sometimes(two bonding pairs and two lone pairs)
- Electrong geometry is tetrahedral
- Molecular geometry- trigonal pyramidal or( sometimes bent like H20) Ex:One lone pair and three bonding( trigonal pyramidal)
