In 1521, he destroyed Tenochtitlán completely, establishedMexico City as the capital of New Spain (now Mexico), and served briefly as its governor. |

It was comprised of all the land under Spanish control north of the Isthmus of Panama and included parts of the southern US. It also came to include the Spanish possessions in the Caribbean and the Philippines. The viceroyalty was abolished in 1821, when Mexico achieved independence. |
