An air mass is a large volume of air that takes on the climatic conditions of the area where it is formed. An airmass originating over an ocean contains a considerable amount of moisture. As the air passes over land, the moisture may be released in some form of precipitation. Airmasses also take on the temperature characteristics of the area they form. |

As the air rises, it expands because of the lower air pressure. As the air expands, it cools. When air is cooled, it eventually reaches a temperature at which it is saturated with water vapour, that is, if it's holding as mich water as it possibly can at that temperature and air pressure. Further cooling leads to condenation. |
