Banning books because they include swear words, racist terms, and emotional topics does not "help" students learn about and become aware of the problems that they could possibly encounter in real life. How are students supposed to learn about and become aware of these things if they aren't allowed to be taught them in school? By banning certain books because of 1 or 2 cuss words and maybe an occasional racial remark isn't helping prepare them for what actually goes on in the real world. The adventures of Huckleberry Finn was banned because it uses "vulgar" language and " portrays the South in a bad light". How can the South be portrayed in a bad light if it is being portrayed as it truly was?

There should not have to be a discussion as to why books should or should not be banned. Many books are written solely to inform readers about how real life situations occur and the reasons why. Schools slow fictional books like the Twilight Saga to remain in their libraries but ban a book like Huckleberry Finn. What does Twilight have that Huckleberry Finn and any other book like it don't? When it comes to the decisions on which books are allowed to be read is reality a factor or is it all about some fantasy world where nothing bad happens?

How can a book determine the way that people act or treat others? Books are created to enhance ones mind, not corrupt it. Many things in books can not compare to things that people say, learn or do in real life. It is more likely for someone to be influenced by their peers and things they see on tv than for someone to base their decisions off of a book. Books like Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men are not self help books so why would anyone take them serious enough to determine the choices that they make?

Even though things like discrimination and racism aren't as out there today does not mean that it still doesn't exist. Things like this might not ever go away even though some people are not as open with it. Books are here to help readers understand what these problems are and how to deal with and react to it should they ever have to experience it.

Censorship is just another word for unfair. In many cases, this censorship that is supposedly created to protect students from "vulgarity" or feeling like something about their race or culture is being portrayed unfairly can be the very thing that affects society. First books, then Justin Beiber's pointless song being held above "God Bless America", is the goal of censorship to ban all things with meaning and replace them with things like stupid love songs.
