Term
What is a centriole?
Definition
structure in a cell division from which spindel fibres develop
Term
What is plasmodesmata?
Definition

s t r a n d s

of cytoplasm linking cells t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r

Term
What are the 4 organelles that are in plant cells only?
Definition
  • Cell wall
  • Chloroplasts
  • Large perminant Vacule
  • Plasmodesmata
Term
What are the two organelles present in an animal cell only?
Definition
  • Small temporary vacule
  • Centrioles
Term
What is the 2 purpose's and 2 structure's of a cellulose cell wall?
Definition

Consists of cellulose microfibrils embedded in a polysaccharide matrix.

functions:

  • provide strenght and support
  • permit movement of water from cell to cell
Term
What are the 3 structures and 1 function of a Vacule?
Definition

fluid filled sac bound by a single membrane (the tonoplast)

contain cell sap, a storage site for chemicals (e.g. glucose)

Provides an osmotic system which functions in support of young tissues.

Term

What is a chloroplast made up of? (5 things)

IDGSS

Definition
  • Inter-granal thylakoid
  • Double membrane
  • Granum
  • Stroma
  • Starch grain
Term
What is the function of a chloroplast?
Definition

Photosynthesis.

The arrangement of a chloroplast creates a large surface area for trapping light energy.

Term
Where is the centriole located?
Definition
Just outside the nucleus in a distinct region of the cytoplasm known as the centrosome.
Term
What is a Lysosome?
Definition

small vacules formed when portions of the Golgi body are pinched off.

They contain and isolate digestive enzymes from the remainder of the cell.

Term
What happens to the lysosomes? (2)
Definition

They can release the enzymes to destroy worn out organelles.

They discharge their contents in the membrane lined vacuole where digestion is carried out

Term
What is phagocytosis? (lysosome related)
Definition

When a lysosome digests material that has been taken into the cell.

E.g. white blood cells engulf bacteria by phagocytosis and the lysosomes discharge their contents into the vesicle so formed and digest the bacterium.
