Definition
a set of tubular membranes that extends from the nuclear envelope and is studded with ribosomes (rough ER). The proteins (polypeptides) that are formed here either get incorporated into the cell membrane or are expelled from the cell. |

Term

Definition
as the tubules get further away from the nucleus, the ribosomes get fewer, thus smooth ER. Here lipids are synthesized and added to the new proteins. |

|
Term
|
Definition
membranous sacs that pinch off the end of the ER tubules, containing the new proteins. Vesicles transport the new proteins to the next step in protein processing: |

Term
|
Definition
a stack of flat sacs where carbohydrates are synthesized. The carbohydrate can be attached to proteins (glycoproteins) or lipids (glycolipids). |
