Difference between Routing and routed protocols? |
|
Definition
In short, routed protocols route your data and routing protocols send routing updates between routers about the status of the network so that your routed protocol data can be routed
- Routing protocols
- Routed protocols
-
routed protocol can be routed
-
Routed protocols get routed
-
are protocol suits that can be mapped to virtual addresses and operate on level 3 of the OSI model.
-
A routed protocol can be routed by a router, which means that it can be forwarded from one router to another
-
A routed protocol contains the data elements required for a packet to be sent outside its host network or network segment

Concerning static routes,
If the subnet mask is ommitted?
If the administrative distance is omitted?
The administrative distance is used to?
|
|
Definition
If the subnet mask is ommitted the IP class will default to the network number of the destination
If the administrative distance is omitted, it will default to 1 if the next hop is configured and 0 if the exit interface is configured
the administrative distance is used to statically assign the distance to the destination network
ip route destination_network_#{subnet_mask} IP_address_of _next_hop_neighbor {administrative_distance} [permanent]
ip route destination_network_#{subnet_mask} interface_to_exit{administrative_distance} [permanent]

Concerning show IP protocols, what timers are good to note? |
|
Definition
update interval, hold time and purge time
- For RIP, update interval is every 30 seconds, the hold time is 180 seconds, and the purge time is 240 seconds.
- This means that under normal conditions, an update will be recieved within 30 seconds.
-THis update is kept in the routing table as active for 180 seconds.
- If no update is received within 180 seconds, the route is declared bad.
-But, the router keeps the route just in case it recieves an update, but if no updates received within 240 seconds, the route is removed
The last update field indicates how long ago the last update for the particual network was recieved |
