Term
What is used to measure left ventricular function?
Definition
Pulmonary artery pressure monitoring
Term

Systolic

and

Diastolic

Definition

systolic= 15-25

diastolic= 8-15

Term
What is wedge pressure?
Definition
Balloon tip of P.A. catheter is inflated, and floats into pul. artery until it becomes wedged.  This impedes blood flow.  A pressure measurement is taken within seconds after wedging of the p.a. cath.  Then the balloon is immediately deflated and blood flow is restored.
Term
What should the nurse do after getting a wedge pressure?
Definition
ensure the cath. has returned to its normal position in the pul. artery by evaluating the PA pressure waveform.
Term

1. catheter

2.  Heparinized flush system

 should the pressure bag

be maintained at?

300 mm Hg
Term
What is the phlebostatic axis?
Definition

The crossing of 2 reference points:

1) a line from the 4th intercostal space where it joins the sternum

2)a line midway between the ant. and post. surfaces of the chest near axilla area

Term
What is the phlebostatic level?
Definition

Term
Why do pts need hemodynamic monitoring?
Definition
To provide continuous assessment of the cardiovascular system of critically ill pts in order to dx and manage their complex medical conditions.
Term
What are nsg responsibilities when caring for a pt who is undergoing hemodynamic monitoring?
Definition

1- make sure the system is set up and maintained properly- patent and free of air bubbles

2-  check to make sure stopcock of transducer is at phlebostatic level

3- to ensure that the pressure system is properly fx at atmospheric pressure (the nurse est. the zero reference point)

Term
How do you est. the zero reference point?
Definition
place the stopcock of transducer at the phlebostatic level, opening the transducer to air, and activating the zero fx key on the bedside monitor
Term
If a pt is on hemo. monitoring, how high can the head of bed be elevated? and What should nurse do after raising head of bed?
Definition

Can be raised up to 60 degrees-

nurse repositions the system to the phlebostatic level to ensure accurate reading
