Why are prisons called penitentiaries?
Definition
Belief was originally that the only way to rehabilitate criminals was through solitary confinement. Walls were built extra thick, there were no windows, guards even wore socks over their shoes to minimize distracting noise.  There was a skylight to focus prisoners' attention on the heavens. This was to force criminals to consider the crimes they were convicted of and to become penitent for them- regretful, contrite, repentant.
