Term
Definition
In hydrologic terms, permeable layers of underground rock, or sand that hold or transmit groundwater below the water table that will yield water to a well in sufficient quantities to produce water for beneficial use. |

Artesian (Well) Formation: [image] |
Definition
An artesian aquifer is a confined aquifer containing groundwater that will flow upwards through a well without the need for pumping. Water may even spurt out of the ground if the natural pressure is high enough. An aquifer provides the water for an artesian well. An aquifer is a layer of soft rock, like limestone or sandstone, that absorbs water from an inlet path. |

Term
Evapotranspiration: [image] |
Definition
The process by which water re-enters the atmosphere through evaporation from the ground and transpiration by plants. |
Term
Definition
A geyser is a type of hot spring that erupts periodically, ejecting a column of hot water and steam into the air. |
Term
Definition
The whole body of water that exists on or close to the surface of the Earth. This includes the oceans, seas, lakes, and the water in the atmosphere |
Term
Definition
Not easily penetrated. The property of a material or soil that does not allow, or allows only with great difficulty, the movement or passage of water or fluids. |
Term
Definition
Ability of rock to transmit fluids through pore spaces. |
Term
Definition
The volume of pore space in a rock, sediment or soil. Usually expressed as a percentage. This pore space can include openings between grains, fracture openings and caverns. |
Term
Definition
Water added to an aquifer or other water body. An aquifer is recharged by precipitation in an area where the aquifer has a porous connection to the surface. |
Term
Definition
Condition of having rainfall greater then the need for moisture when the soil is already saturated. |
Term
Definition
The condition where plants draw water from the soil at times when the need for moisture is greater then the rainfall. |
Term
Definition
Describes the income and the spending of the water in a region. |
Term
Definition
The hydrologic cycle; the never-ending movement of water from one part of the hydrosphere to another. |
Term
Definition
The surface below which the ground is saturated with water. |
