Definition

Frontal bone:

-Axial

-Forms the anterior portion of the skull above the eyes.

-Anterior portion of the skull.

Nasal bone:

-Axial

-Long bones that lie side by side and are fused at the midline where they form the bridge of the nose.

-Anterior to the skull

Maxilla:

-Axial

-Forms the upper jaw

-Part of it comprosises the anterior roof of the mouth (hard pallate)

-Inferior to the frontal bone

Zygomatic bone:

-Axial

-Form the prominences of the cheeks below and to the sides of the eyes

-Superior to the mandible

-Nickname=cheek bone

Term

Skull: Parietal bone, occipital bone, mandible bone, and sphenoid bone. [image]

Definition

Parietal bone:

-Axial

-Anterior portion of the skull, above the eyes

-Contains two frontal sinuses

-Posterior to the frontal bone

Occipital bone:

-Axial

-Forms the back of the skull and the base of the cranium

-Posterior to the front of the skull

Mandible bone:

-Axial

-a movable bone held to the cranium by ligaments

-Inferior to the maxilla

-Nickname: Lower jaw bone

Sphenoid bone:

 -Axial

-Wedged between several other bones in the anterior portion of the cranium

-Medial bone within the skull; located along the midline

Term

Skull: Temporal bone and mastoid process.

Definition

Temporal bone:

-Axial

-one on each side of the skull

-form both the sides and the base of the cranium

-Lateral to the sphenoid bone

Mastoid process:

-Axial

-Provides an attachment for certain muscles of the neck

-Inferior to the temporal bone

Term

Skull: Vomer bone and foramen magnum.

Definition

Vomer bone:

-Axial

-Located along the midline within the nasal cavity

-Superior to the mandible

Foramen magnum:

-Axial

-Large opening on the skull's lower surface

-Inferior to the parietal bone

Term

Middle Ear Ossicles: Malleus (Hammer), Incus (anvil), stapes (stirrup).

Definition

Malleus (Hammer):

-Axial

-Attached to the inner surface of the eardrum; transmits the sound vibrations from the eardrum to the incus

Incus (anvil):

-Axial

-The middle ossicle

Stapes (stirrup):

-Axial

-Smallest and lightest bone in the human body

-Inferior to the other two ossicles

Term

Hyoid bone.

Definition

Hyoid bone:

-Axial

-Located in the neck between the lower jaw and the larynx

-Inferior to the skull

Term

Vertebral column: Cervical vertebrae, thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx

Definition

Cervical vertebrae (7):

-Axial

-*Holes are on the sides

-Top of the spine

Thoracic vertebrae (12):

-Axial

-Middle of the spine

Lumbar vertebrae (5):

-Axial

-Bottom of the spine

Sacrum:

-Axial

-Distil end of the spine

-Part of the pelvis

-Superior to the coccyx

Coccyx:

-Axial

-Attached to the end of the sacrum

-Inferior to the sacrum

-Nickname: tailbone
