Term
What is axial skeleton?
Definition
Bones arranged along the veritcal line that passes through the body from head to space between feet. Head, spinal cord.
Term
What is appendicular skeleton?
Definition
Upper and lower extremities and the bones that attach the extremities to the axis of the body.
Term
What are the five types of white blood cells?
Definition
Basophils (helps with inflammation), neutrophils (phagocytosis during inflammation), lymphocytes(immune responses), monocytes (defense against worms and bacteria), eosinohils (fat removal from blood).
Term
Define erythrocyes.
Definition
Red blood cells. Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide. Biconcave disks. Contain hemoglobin. Originate from stem cels in the bone marrow.
Term
Define Leukocytes.
Definition
White blood cells responsible for housekeeping and defense; derived from bone marrow. Two types of WBC: 1. Granulocytes (have granules in cytoplasm) and include neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils; 2. Agranulocytes; have no granules; include monocytes and lymphocytes.
Term
Define Thrombocytes.
Definition
Platelets: function is hemostasis; helps to clot the blood.
Term
What are the two main functions of white blood cells?
Definition
Housekeeping and defense.
Term
what is the immature stage of a platelet?
Definition
Megakaryocytes
Term
What is the function of hemoglobin?
Definition
To carry oxygen.
Term
What is albumin and what happens to the body when there is not enough of it?
Definition
Albumin moves water in and out of the blood. Also carries chemicals like swastes and therapeutic drugs. If there is not enough, it causes edema.
Term
What cell do all blood cells come from?
Definition
Stem cells.
Term
what makes up hemoglobin?
Definition
An iron-containing pigment molecule that binds with oxygen, forming oxyhemoglobin.
Term
What is erythropoietin and where does it come from?
Definition
Erythropoietin stimulates bone marrow to produce more red blood cells in the kidneys when the oxygen in the blood drops too low.
Term

What are the different blood types and how are they identified?

Definition

A (has A markers),B (has B markers), AB (has both markers) and O (has neither markers); determined by proteins on the surface of the red blood cells.

Term
What happens when incompatible blood is mixed?
Definition
Agglutination takes place
Term
Idenitify normal lab value ranges for RBC, WBC, Platelets, Hemoglobin and Hematocrit.
Definition
RBC: 4.2-6.1 WBC: 4.3 - 10.8 Platelets: 140,000-450,000 Hemoglobin: M: 13-16, F: 12-15 Hematocrit: M: 40-52%, F: 37-46%, CHild: 31-43%
Term
What is hemostasis?
Definition
Helps prevent blood loss.
