Hemochromatosis causes and result? |
|
Definition
-Caused by mutated/deficient HFE which helps bring Fe into enterocytes from plasma -The low cellular Fe causes an excess expression of DMT1 (divalent metal transporter 1) and thus high total Fe -The excess Fe gets complexed to Ferritin and eventually to Hemosiderin which damages various tissue
-damages liver (cirrhosis), pancreas (diabetes), joints (arthritis), and skin (dermatitis and discoloration) -"bronze diabetes" -It is not really a problem for women because of menstruation |

Iron def; causes and symptoms? |
|
Definition
-Can be caused by excessive bleeding, inhibited absorption (by a compound), lead poisoning (inhibits the chelation of iron onto protoporphyrin by ferrochelatase) -Symptoms will be weakness with hypochromic, microcytic anemia -Levels of iron, ferritin, and ALA (esp.) will depend on whether it is legitimate Fe def. or lead poisoning -Also, with lead you will get sideroblastic cells |
