Definition

What are the major warning flags for an emergency animal disease?
Definition
Unexplained deaths
Sores or ulcers on the feet or in the mouth (may manifest as a reluctance to eat or move)
Excessive salvation
Reduction in milk or egg yield
Any kind of excessive discharge (incl diarrhoea) esp if it has blood in it
Staggering
Head drooping
Severe lameness
High numbers of affected stock

What are the features of a Restricted area?
Definition
RAs contain all of the infected properties and dangerous contact premises and as may of the suspected premises as possible.
In a case of FMD the RA must extend at least 3 km from the furthest out IPs

What are the features of a Controlled area?
Definition
A CA extends at lest 10 km around the RA and aims to to control the movement of susceptible livestock and products for as long as necessary to complete the tracing of the stuff

- Outlines the role and powers of the a RLP officers (basically the same as above)

What constitutes an Emergency Animal Disease (EAD)?
Definition
It is a disease the could cause serious damage and disruption to Australia's livestock industry, national economy, human health and/or the enviroment

For a disease to be classified as an EAD it must meet one of the following:
- Not be endemic to Australia and it must be in the national interest to be free of the disease
- It would have a national impact if the disease was introduced into australia
- It is a serious infectious disease of unknown or uncertain cause, and may be a toally new disease
- It is an endemic disease that is undergoing a large scale outbreak that is having a serious impact

How would you diagnose FMD?
Definition
Lab studies are essential:
- Fresh vesicular fluid and surrounding epithelial tissue should be collected in glycerol saline for lab tests (ELISA - preffered, complement fixation test, high rate of false negatives)
Serological tests
- Virus neutralisation
- ELISA
- Non-structural protein antibody tests
